Quantum Leaps: An Evening of New Video

Nomad Nights host Astria Suparak to screen a curated selection of new video work. Quantum Leaps includes work by the following artists: Daniel Barrow, Philippe Blanchard, Dearraindrop, Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby, Jim Finn, Caroline Koebel, J. Macdonell, Jim Munroe, Liz Rosenfeld, Seth Price and Andy Puls

"Quantum leap", a physics term deriving from the mid 1900s indicating significant and swift advances (originally via a sudden shift in energy within an atom), became the title of an early 1990s American television series featuring a time travelling, body-swapping, do-gooder scientist. In 2006 this inspirational screening of new video follows suit, cataloguing heroes, compressing history, and hallucinating futures.

We are in a hyperdated time populated by minor celebrity comebacks and movie remakes, soundtracked by mash-ups and remixes, and backdropped by vintage/old school/retro simulacra. Artists now are as inspired by history they weren’t quite conscious for as by their lived experiences. Here it is possible to amalgamate eras, to break out of social and gender constraints, and to cobble together a fantasy lineage. Many of the artists bypass ineffectual adoration for social edification, by documenting communities, reincarnating overlooked experimental films, sharing Communist souvenir collections, assembling biographies of personal heroes, and dispatching personal visions of history through the storytelling tradition.

About The Curator: Astria Suparak is an artist who also curates for museums, festivals, and bands, including PS1 Contemporary Art Center, The Liverpool Biennial, Kurtzfilmtage Oberhausen, Yale University, and Anthology Film Archives. She also brings experimental film and video art to non-institutional venues such as skating rinks, ships, sports bars, churches and elementary schools. Her work can be seen in numerous publications, streets, and collections. Astria Suparak currently resides in Canada.

Filmmaker and tramp Bill Daniel is back in the van and touring the USA with
a program of new work, including his recently completed documentary on the
secret history of hobo and railworker graffiti, Who is Bozo Texino? The film
has been wowing audiences of punks, geezers, foamers and graffiti toughs all
over the West Coast this summer. The film was featured in the Viennale
International Film Festival in Austria in October.

Headlining is Daniel’s 56min documentary on the secret history of hobo and
railworker graffiti, called Who is Bozo Texino? Shooting over a period of 16
years, Daniel rode freights across the West, gathering interviews and clues
to the identities of many of the most legendary boxcar artists while
discovering a vast underground folkloric practice that has existed for over
a century. This gritty black and white documentary tells the mostly-factual
account of the epic quest and unlikely discovery of railroading's most
mysterious artist.

Also screeewning:
Waldo Point by Saul Rouda, 1970, 20 min. A stoned and song-filled
documentary shot in Sausalito’s hippie houseboat community. An utterly
unique and authentic snapshot of ‘60’s freedom shot by a young film student
who was living moored out in San Francisco Bay in a floating utopia of
hand-made houseboats. Shaggy pirate-hippies drink wine, pass joints, and
discuss building boats from garbage.

Britton S. Dakota by Vanessa Renwick, 2004, 7 min. Depression-era children
are hypnotized by the camera in this re-discovered imagery from 1938. Score
by Johnne Eschleman. Portland-based filmmaker Vanessa Renwick is Director of
Affairs of the Oregon Dept. of Kick Ass. (www.odoka.org)

colaboration about three characters and the outrageous friend that connects
them.

Joel Delatte & Erin Wilkinson, hailing from Jackson, Mississippi, will bring
their sweet, pensive melodic poetry.

Gracing the makeshift stage, acoustic guitar in hand, Bethany Raybourne's gonna rock it out
with tunes influenced by the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, Sparkle Horse, and Iron and
Wine. Bethany calls it "positive emotion." We call it awesome.

Next on the roster of triumphal happenings, Chad Brooks and Shonnie Lewis will present a
glorious nuance of short films. From one town's beginnings to introspection and light-hearted
observation, the sound man and video girl have something to say.
